Tent Town ProjectTent Town Project Commences
The Tent Town project - led by the Friends of Wonthaggi Heathland & Coastal Reserve Inc - will convert grazing land into a revegetated public space on this historic site and is funded by a $100K grant from the Bass Coast Shire Council and support from Parks Victoria as the designated Land Manager.
Work to date includes terminating the grazing licence, building a car park, ensuring adequate fencing and undertaking broadacre spraying prior to the direct seeding with indigenous seeds from of the Wonthaggi Seedbank.

In November 1909, the Tent Town site was established as accommodation for 12 miners and became the seed for what was to become the town of Wonthaggi. Although the site was not used as miner’s accommodation after 1910, by July 1910 it is recorded that there are 6,000 miners n the area (not all at Tent Town, of course), so the town of Wonthaggi was growing fast.
