Waring Wombat Season [Apr-Jul]

Cool, rainy days follow misty mornings. The time of highest rainfall and lowest temperatures.  Waring (wombats) emerge to bask and graze in the sunshine.

Bulen-bulen (Superb Lyrebird) males perform their courtship displays.

Hearts of Kombadik (Soft Tree-ferns) are the major food when no fruits are available.

Days are short and nights are long.

The constellation of Sagittarius rises in the southeast after sunset, indicating the mid point of cold weather.

Cassia Lower Reserve - Community Consultation

Cassia100With the approval of a grant to restore the environmental integrity of the Cassia St Lower Reserve, members of the Cassia St community were invited to help guide the project by identifying assets and issues. 

A meeting at the Wonthaggi Life Saving Club on Sat 9-Feb-2013 attracted 25 people and resulted in valuable local knowledge being collected and documented here.  Click on the title to see the outcomes.

  1. STREAM - A Stream runs through the Reserve which was dammed at the Surf Beach Road end to provide a water supply for WLSC.  The source of the water is considered to be from seepage and drainage.  Issues to be considered include the impact of removing the dam as well as the cost. Advice will be sought from Council Engineers.    

  2. NATIVE BEES - There are many on the Cassia Street side about half way up.

  3. KIDS’ CUBBY HOUSE - there is a tree house that should be conserved

  4. TREE FERN - A large tree fern was growing in the Reserve. Check whether it stills exists after clearing takes place.

  5. REMNANT NATIVE FLORA - Extent of the surviving native vegetation to be assessed.  

  6. REMNANT NATIVE FAUNA - Fauna sightings include koalas, wombats, wallabies and echidnas as well as abundant bird life. However there is also evidence of feral cats and non native birds.


  1. WOODY WEEDS - Extensive areas of woody weeds including mirror bush and pittosporum

  2. BLACKBERRY - Blackberry extend over a large areas

  3. FIRE RISK - Because of the overgrown nature of the Reserve it is a fire hazard – DSE advice required

  4. OVERHEAD POWER LINES - Power lines runs across the top of the reserve servicing neighbouring houses


  6. COMPOSITION OF THE WATER IN THE STREAM - May be polluted with foam noticed at the dam end

  7. LACK OF ACCESS TO THE RESERVE - Perhaps a pathway or track should be considered as well as signage.

  8. CAR PARKING - It was suggested that bollards be placed along the road to restrict parking in the Reserve

  9. DRAINAGE - Drainage is a major issue in the area around the Reserve. Nearby houses often have water around. The Council needs to investigate the lack of adequate drainage in the area of Cassia Street. Also the impact of future Drainage Works from the new development to the north of the town need to be considered

  10. BOUNDARY DEFINITION - Over time neighbouring residents have taken responsibility for clearing the area around their homes and thus blurred the site of the actual boundary. The actual boundary of the Reserve especially on the east side needs to be confirmed.

  11. PEDESTRIAN SAFETY ON SURF BEACH ROAD - Because the overgrowth is growing out from the Reserve in Surf Beach Road, pedestrians are forced to stray onto the road to negotiate the area the danger of which is exacerbated by the nearby crest of the hill. There needs to be a clear space allowed for pedestrian transition past the Reserve.
