Working Bee 17 June 2017

WB1706FrontVolunteers continued working in the foreshore area at the western end of Undertow Bay. This area is located between Orana campground and the coast. Woody weeds which had previously been cut down and poisoned by local contractor, Envirogain were cut and stacked to make room for planting.

Some Mirror Bush that had survived the initial clearing were cut at ground level and the stumps poisoned to prevent them regrowing.  The smaller Dolichos Pea seedlings were carefully hand pulled and some larger vines were cut at ground level and poisoned.

We will need to remain vigilant in removing weed seedlings as they emerge. There is a large seed load in this area which will continue to germinate over the next few years.  The area is now ready for planting with a mix of indigenous plants. This planting will start to restore this precious habitat which has been seriously degraded by the invasion of woody weeds.

With the hard work completed in this eastern area, now the fun begins. We will be planting tubestock at the next working bee on Saturday 8 June so come along and join us in this very worthwhile environmental activity working alongside enthusiastic members of our community.
