Working Bee 13 May 2017

WB1705front2The two projects for our May working bee were removing Sea Spurge from the dunes near Harmers Haven and preparing an area for planting adjacent to Orana campground at Cape Paterson.

Four enthusiastic volunteers drove to Harmers Haven and spent the morning hand pulling Sea Spurge (Euphorbia paralias) seedlings from the dunes near Wreck Creek. While the Sea Spurge invasion has been successfully controlled through spraying, many viable seeds remain in the sand. We need to remove the seedlings as they emerge to prevent them re-infesting the dunes.

A dense infestation of woody weeds (predominately Coprosma repens, commonly known as Mirror bush or Shiny Molly) growing in the foreshore south of Orana campground has recently been cut down and the stumps poisoned by local contractor Envirogain. This was made possible through a grant from Bass Coast Shire Council.

A group of 8 volunteers forged their way through the tangle of cut branches and started preparing the area for planting. We plan to finish preparing this area at the June working bee and will re-plant with indigenous trees and shrubs in the following months.

Many thanks to all the hard working volunteers who are helping to preserve and re- vegetate our foreshore environment.
